With the sweltering heat sizzling our senses it only makes sense we give ourselves relief by sporting summer stylish shorts, shirts and shoes combinations! As men, we can often neglect the practicality, usefulness, and sense of style that can be attributed to the right shirt and shoes combined with a pair of shorts.
There are many types and styles of shorts; gym, boardshorts, bermudas, cargos, denims, chinos as well as different fits; loose, classic, slim, flat fronts, oxford weave, the list can go on. And while younger men may enjoy the comfort of a baggy pair of gym shorts, as we get older and the function of shorts remains the same, the manner in which we wear our shorts must mature as we age.
Today we’ll discuss three short, shirt and shoe combinations ideal for men over 50 and some shirts and shoes which compliment. The basic rule with shorts, as with men’s fashion in general, is proper color coordination. When it comes to shorts, the basic colors you want to cover are navy and khaki. These colors are the most versatile to men’s casual wear. While black shorts likely match almost any shirt you might wear with them, the color can limit the shoes and belts you can combine with them as well.
With that said, my top color choices for shorts would be navy, khaki, and your choice of burgundy, green or lavender depending on your personal preference or based on what color shirts and shoes you already own.
Navy Shorts
One look I encourage you to try is navy shorts with brown boat shoes and a purple or lavender tee shirt or polo. This ensemble gives a man a great colorful presence without being too gaudy or seeming to stick out. Navy shorts with a lighter blue shirt also has the same effect for men who might not envision themselves wearing a color with the notice-able appeal of a color like purple or lavender.
Khaki Shorts
Khaki is just as versatile as navy and can be combined with just about any color shirt. I recommend avoiding black shoes and belt with khaki shorts because the black shoes will take away from any array of color you include in your wardrobe.
Burgundy, Green or Lavender Shorts
I did not specify a single third color pair of shorts that are essential because navy and khaki are the most universal color of shorts a man can own. For your third pair of casual shorts I say it is in your best interest to experiment with a favorite color or even some shorts that have patterns like stripes or plaid. Find shorts that allow your personal sense of style stand out and can complement the tee-shirts or polos you may have or want to get.
Shirts & Shoes
When it comes to shirts and shoes that can be matched with shorts of your choice, there are a wide array of casual options that can complete the look. Sperry’s and boat shoes are a great look with shorts in general. Brown or tan colored shoes of this variety tend to be the most versatile, but navy and black are also great options. The key with shoes as always is to match them up with a nice belt of the same color.
Final Thoughts on 3 Summer Stylish Shorts Combinations
Shirts, polos, tee-shirts and short sleeve button-ups are all great selections depending on the occasion. For somewhat business casual/ social settings the button-up shirt is a good choice. For anything more outdoor oriented a nice tee-shirt or polo would be best, especially for things like golf or anything requiring being outside or a good amount of movement.
