Casual Springtime Fashion Tips For Men Over 50

Finally, winter is releasing its hold and spring is technically here, in between snowstorms! Depending on where you are, itā€™s time to think about shedding the dark, heavy-weight coats and adding some color and variety to your look. One of the great things with menā€™s fashion, especially men over 50, is we donā€™t have the expectations of changing our wardrobe line with the seasons. The clothes that are cleaned and lying dormant in drawers for the last few months are perfectly fine to wear again. But if you’re looking for some new ideas, we can help with our piece on – Spring Time Casual Tips for Men Over 50.

Whatever the atmosphere youā€™re a part of this spring, be it enjoying an after-hours office party, heading downtown for an evening, coffee at a sidewalk bistro, or drinks with that special someone, you can switch to casual relatively quickly and affordably.

Jeans

Denim runs the gamut from a fashion statement to work pants and everything in between. Itā€™s probably the easiest to go casual with, comes in a variety of colors and fits in most social situations. The price varies based on your comfort level; high end jeans can run for almost $600, or you can feel great with the ones we have listed here. Iā€™m a huge fan of the Lee Modern Series Active Comfort Straight Legs with regards to their cost and durability, they have flexibility in the waistband, plus they donā€™t come across as low-riding skinnies a 20-something would wear. Polos

Polos are another staple to a manā€™s casual wardrobe. Aside from the wide range of available utility from the sport, work, or dress use, they can be paired with just about any style of pants, from jeans to slacks and come in a wide range of colors. Weā€™ll be doing a piece on the more ā€œupscaleā€ polos later, so for now weā€™ll stick to the casual brands. Iā€™m partial to the very affordable, non-sport, H2H brand (when theyā€™re available) because theyā€™re form fitting, keep their color after numerous washings, and hold their shape (sleeves/collars) rather well. Be careful with the size, they run small. Stocky and muscular builds should scale up one to two sizes. Also buy the MODCHOK brand for when you need something a little different for casual settings. Van Heusen is my pick for a slightly formal polo, but get the slim fit or you’ll look like a box. (Images not showing? Click here to be redirected to our Amazon Affiliate page.)

T-Shirts

I like that the t-shirt has evolved into something more of a casual offering for menā€™s wardrobes. I live in the southeast, so having a drink outside in the evening still means I’m dealing with noticeable heat and humidity, so itā€™s nice to ā€œdress-downā€ and still be presentable.

Moving from outside to inside? Simply add a button down or light sports jacket over the tee and youā€™ve presented a color-coordinated, layered look. Similar the polo, t-shirts today come in a range of sizes and colors and can easily compliment the casual style while providing comfort. Brands abound of course, but I prefer the Apt. 9 Crewneck and V-neck styles. Theyā€™re form-fitting, durable, and the color and shape stand up well to multiple washings. (Images not showing? Jackets

Every man, especially men over 50, either from work requirements or as a fashion staple, should have at least two to three sports jackets in the closet. Iā€™m not talking about “dress suit” jackets, although they can be worn to enhance a casual look in certain designs, but rather the single-button utility blazer.

You don’t need to break the bank for these and should keep one handy in the primary colors; black, blue, grey and tan/browns for when you need to step up the casual a bit. These can fit over any of the articles discussed today, from pairing with jeans to button-downs, polos and the tee. (I have a couple of Haggar jackets that I keep handy for date nights. They’re comfortable and fit well.) Also check out our blog specific on Jackets and Blazers. (Images not showing? Click here to be redirected to our Amazon Affiliate page.)
