The majority of Americans have enjoyed a ‘staycation’ according to YouGov, with 53% of us choosing to stay in the U.S. for our summer vacation. Staycations are on the rise, with more of us than ever rejecting the lure of going abroad to explore our own expansive homeland.
What is a staycation?
A staycation is leaving the passport at home and heading out to the attractions on your doorstep. Americans, however, are fortunate to have a vast selection of U.S. getaways to choose from, with beach breaks, jazz festivals, and vineyards galore to visit.

Here are our top 5 destinations for your U.S. summer vacation in 2019:
5. Golden Isles, Georgia
The barrier islands nestled in the south of Georgia offer staycation travelers the choice of adventure or relaxation on their white sands. Nature enthusiasts can opt for a birding tour on the Colonial Coast with over 300 species to spot, or jump in a boat to ride along the waves with the resident dolphins.
Take a historic walk along the Golden Isles, with museum tours to highlight the unique past of this area. Over 400 years ago, Spaniards landed on this coast hoping to strike gold, but instead became enamoured by its natural beauty and milder climes. If you’re feeling brave, take a ghost tour on Brunswick Island. Otherwise, check out St. Simons island which was voted the most romantic town in the U.S. in 2014.
The Golden Isles is a haven if you’re looking for an active vacation: horse ride along the beach, go boating in the gently swaying waves, or play a few rounds on their renowned golf courses.
4. Steamboat Springs, Colorado
Best known for its ski resorts in the spring, this Rocky Mountains resort regularly tops the wish list for Americans all year round. Whether you thrive in the great outdoors, or prefer soaking up the culture of this old pioneer town, there is something just for you.
In the summer, the ice melt flows into the Yampa river, creating the perfect fly-fishing conditions. Hit the trails for a scenic hike to the nearby Fish Creek Falls, or head to Strawberry Park for the natural hot springs. An aircraft tour will allow you to survey the surroundings from above. To complete your natural escape, visit the Yampa Botanic Gardens which is a stone’s throw away.
For something a bit different on your staycation, the Colorado hot air balloon festival on July 13-14 takes over the sky with a vibrant display. Local pottery making classes give you the chance to get behind the wheel. The Strings music festival is hosting over 70 events and brings together classical musicians from across the nation. You can also saddle up for the Pro Rodeo series which runs all summer long.
3. Newport, Rhode Island
It’s no surprise that Newport makes this staycation list, with so many events crammed into this tiny island. This year’s summer calendar is bursting with flower shows, international polo matches and a showcase of classic British motors. Newport hosts the International Tennis Hall of Fame tournament from July 14-21, attracting the top ATP World tour pros to play for glory on their grass courts.
For music fans, the juggernaut of a jazz festival that has been running since 1954 returns this year from August 2-4. This year, the top acts playing at the Fort Adams State Park include Diane Reeves, Herbie Hancock, and Corinne Bailey Rae. If you prefer smaller crowds, BridgeFest offers more intimate gigs showcasing folk, bluegrass and jazz by the local community.
Take a stroll along the impressive waterfront to the Point to take in the ocean vista, then mosey along the historic Bellevue Avenue. Local trolley tours of the Gilded Mansions will help you discover the secrets of this pre-colonial capital. If you’re hungry, join a walking food tour that includes a four-course meal filled with the bounties of the sea as you traverse the top sightseeing spots.
2. Portland, Maine
The lighthouses, dramatic coastline, and the famous lobsters plucked from the waves make Portland an obvious summer staycation choice. The cobbled streets and stylish boutique shops give the place an antiquated feel. For a further taste of nostalgia, head down the coast to Old Orchard for the wooden pier and seaside amusement park.
There is a distinctly mellow and arty vibe to this city. The Portland Museum of Art is a cultural hotspot, hosting eclectic PMA film nights and currently exhibiting ‘The Expansion of Cubism’ until October 6, 2019.
Seafood is a main attraction for visitors here, who can try everything from sushi to oysters, Michelin starred restaurants or clam chowder joints. Brewery tours and tastings are not to be missed. Try the Allagash White, a Belgian-style wheat beer popular with locals and staycationers alike.
1. Sonoma, California
As Napa Valley’s neighbor, Sonoma is more laidback and rustic, but no less beautiful. 90% of the Sonoma vineyards were untouched by the extensive wildfires back in October 2017, and there are over 400 wineries that remain open for service. What’s more, you’ll be supporting local families and helping to boost the area’s recovery while you savor both the grapes and the rolling countryside.
If wine isn’t your thing, fear not. There are cider houses, microbreweries and distilleries to satiate your thirst. The foodie scene is well established here, with fresh farm produce and organic goodies gracing the plates of its diners. Many of the restaurants have their own farms stocked with seasonal treats to try. There is even a Cheese Trail to follow if you like artisanal cheese.
Take a tour along the Pacific coast and delve into the giant redwood forests, visit the baby harbor seals on Goat Rock beach, or have a picnic at Doran beach. Get on the water by booking a boating tour of the Russian River. To get a taste of history, visit the final home of the author Jack London, or try your hand at a traditional rancho. After a long day, soak your muscles in one of the luxurious spas.
